Mitsubishi Lancer: Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) TOP SAFETY PICK for fourth consecutive year

For the fourth year in a row, a model in Mitsubishi Motors North America, Inc., (MMNA) lineup is one of the select vehicles to be named by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) as a "Top Safety Pick."

The popular and stylish 2010 Mitsubishi Lancer, when equipped with the optional electronic stability control (ESC), joins this elite group that meets the Insurance Institute's very stringent criteria for vehicle crash testing.

In order for a vehicle to be named a "Top Safety Pick" by the Insurance Institute, a car must earn a "good" rating in the organization's three critical areas of analysis:

  1. High-speed front impact crash testing
  2. High-speed side impact crash testing
  3. Evaluation of seat/head restraints for protection against net injuries in rear impact crash testing

The organization also requires that a winning vehicle must offer electronic stability control (ESC) as the Institute's research indicates that it "significantly reduces crash risk, especially the risk of fatal single-vehicle crashes, by helping drivers maintain control of their vehicles during an emergency maneuvers."

The Institute's scoring system consists of ratings of "good," "acceptable," "marginal" or "poor."
