FIVE QUESTIONS WITH JORDAN NORTON
General Manager, City Auto Mitsubishi, Murfreesboro, TN
- Can you tell us the history of your store? We started in Murfreesboro about 13 years ago with a small satellite dealership of used cars under our City Auto brand offering quality used vehicles. In 2023, City Auto became a Mitsubishi Motors dealer partner, utilizing the original dealership footprint and creating a campus with a brand-new state-of-the-art building. City Auto Mitsubishi's Visual Identity stands apart as a model for the look of other dealership facilities inside and outside. One of our partners has a Mitsubishi store in Panama City, Florida, Bay Mitsubishi, so we've had a relationship with Mitsubishi for quite some time now.
Mitsubishi had wanted us to put a store here in Middle Tennessee for a while, but the timing hadn't been right. When we expanded from our previous footprint, I thought to myself, "This is the perfect location." So, we put it all together in our unused building, and it's really changed the way we do business here at City Auto. It's been a great product to offer to the community. The warranties are substantial, and given many people aren't familiar with Mitsubishi, it's been about teaching people what we have to offer.
Out of all SUVs on the market today, we have the most cost-effective three-row SUV in the industry, the Outlander. If you look at comparable SUVs, Mitsubishi's are at least $10,000 less expensive than the Kia Telluride or Hyundai Palisade, which offer similar new-car warranties. Once people hear about what Mitsubishi has to offer, it really opens their eyes to different options. Mitsubishi has been great to us as a new business and through expanding options to the market. - What are your thoughts on Mitsubishi Motors North America, Inc.'s headquarters being local to you in Franklin? I believe it's just a half an hour's drive, which makes you their most-local dealer partner? Being so close and being the flagship store, we've had the opportunity to meet multiple different people from various departments within the company. We had the opportunity to host a meeting here with Mitsubishi stakeholders from all over the country and all over the world. We hosted Mitsubishi Motors executives from Japan, South America, and Australia. In fact, we've event hosted quite a few events at our store for executives from Japan, so it's been a nice experience being so close to Mitsubishi's headquarters in Tennessee. We get a lot of support from them. We've had some trainers from Mitsubishi come over and work with our sales associates on training, technology, and different equipment, so it's been a great asset to have them so close with all the support they can offer.
- Can you tell us how City Auto Mitsubishi has been a key member of the Murfreesboro community? Yes, we're definitely involved with our community. We had an event at the beginning of September where we had a celebration for the opening of the store. It was a big blowout, and we called it the "Triple Diamond Reception" event with the Chamber of Commerce. I'd say there were over about 200 guests invited, and we just had a great time.
We do a lot of business after-hours events to get people in the store, to network, and to get together. However, we're also very involved with Middle Tennessee State University. We do a lot with their faculty and students; their coaches drive Mitsubishis. There are many events at the university that we're involved in, and we have a great relationship with the school overall.
Additionally, we've partnered previously with Mechanics on a Mission. They have a great mission here in Middle Tennessee where they buy vehicles as inexpensively as they can and get them ready to give away to people in need. City Auto has long supported the communities of Murfreesboro and Rutherford County which includes United Way of South Central Tennessee, MTSU, Center for the Performing Arts, and others. - That's wonderful! Have you been personally involved with any of the vehicles that were given away? Most recently, I was involved with a giveaway which went to a single mom working hard to provide for her family. My mom was a single mom so that one resonated with me. She always worked hard and did what was best for everybody else, so it was nice to see the single mother we gave the car to get something she needed.
- Is there anything you'd like to share with the Murfreesboro community and the surrounding areas? I think City Auto has been a great fixture here in Murfreesboro for a while now. We're going on thirteen years of business in the area. We're just an easy-going, no-pressure dealership giving an experience that most people won't find when they go to another dealership. We have a lot to offer the community, and, we have a lot of experience here at City Auto. A lot of our staff are local and have been in the business for years, so we know how to take care of our customers.
Our goal is customer service comes first before anything else, so we try to make sure the customer comes first in every aspect of doing business with us. A lot of the salespeople like to work just because it's an easy experience on both sides with our no-haggle pricing and Mitsubishi warranties. We just try to make it an easy experience because car-buying can be frustrating. That's always been our goal: to make an easy experience with no pressure but also to get you in and out as fast as we can. I know I don't like sitting at car dealerships for a long time when I buy cars, so I know that feeling.
