All new 2011 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport features innovative safety technologies to protect both occupants and pedestrians
Mitsubishi automobiles have a long history of receiving high scores the world over in governmental crash tests, thanks to a coordinated effort on the part of the company's excellent engineers and designers that are ever working to increase the safety performance of their vehicles. And with the introduction of the all-new 2011 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport, the bar has been raised yet again thanks to new cutting-edge safety features both inside and out of this handsome new compact crossover.
The antilock braking system (ABS) incorporates Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD) and Brake Assist. Other on-road dynamic safety features include Active Stability Control (ASC), Traction Control Logic (TCL) and Hill Start Assist, standard equipment on all Outlander Sport models. There is even an available electronically-controlled All-Wheel Control (AWC) system that greatly improves on- or off-road traction in such adverse conditions as snow, ice and rain.
RISE Safety Structure
At the fore is the company's Reinforced Impact Safety Evolution (RISE). The RISE body structure helps to dissipate energy in the event of a collision from any direction: front, side and rear impacts, which decreases the risk of injury to the vehicle's occupants. This technology also helps to protect the fuel system in the event of a rear end impact. Between the numerous occupant safety features within the cabin and the implementation of the RISE safety cage chassis, Mitsubishi expects the new 2011 Outlander Sport to achieve 5-Star crash ratings in the vitally important frontal and side impact tests performed by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).
New plastic front fenders not only return to their original shape in light contact - avoiding an expensive trip to the body shop - but the same deformation characteristics also help to lessen injury in the event of a collision with a pedestrian. Other pedestrian protection technologies include a redesigned hood and an open deck structure at the bottom area of the windshield where it meets the hood; the possibility of serious leg injury has also been mitigated thanks to a newly designed energy absorbing front bumper.
Driver and Occupant Protection
All 2011 Outlander Sport models come equipped with an advanced supplemental restraint system (SRS) at no cost. This includes front airbags for both driver and passenger, driver side knee airbag, side curtain airbags for both front and rear occupants, front seat side airbags, three-point seatbelts for all five seating positions and active front seat headrests which help to reduce whiplash injury as a result of a rear collision. Additionally, the driver and front passenger are further protected by passenger weight and driver's seat position sensors that work with the front airbags to ensure optimal deployment and cushioning. The passenger side front airbag will not deploy if the sensors detect a weight of less than 45 lbs. residing within the seat while on the driver's side, sensors measure the driver's distance from the steering wheel itself.
A brake override system can detect if both the accelerator and brake pedals are being pressed at the same time; if they are, the brake system will override allowing the driver to slow the vehicle down to a standstill. The driver further benefits from Brake Pedal Recession Protection to reduce the chance of a lower leg injury in high-speed collisions.
Mitsubishi's Advanced SRS Driver's Knee Airbag
Catching the occupant's lower limbs through prompt airbag deployment in front of the driver's knees and stabilizing the driver's motion during a crash enables enhanced protection. Mitsubishi's advanced SRS driver's knee airbag offers improved safety when compared to conventional knee protection mechanisms as it greatly reduces the amount of lower body movement and improves the stabilization of the driver, enabling the seatbelts and driver seat airbag to protect the upper body even more effectively.
