2014 Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution At-A-Glance
The winner of numerous World Rally Championship titles, the legendary Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution packs a whirling turbocharged punch beneath its lightweight aluminum hood, along with remarkable agility from its superior Super All-Wheel Control all-wheel drive system.
For the 2014 model year, this ultra-high-performance luxury sports sedan gains a number of new features including:
- New 6.1-in. touchscreen display audio system (standard on all models)
- New HD Radio®
- New SIRIUSXM® satellite radio with 3-month subscription
- New MMCS navigation system with 7-in. high definition touch panel, voice command, 3D mapping, point-of-interest information, real-time traffic, and Mapcare® including two updates (available on all models)
At the heart of every Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution is the potent 4B11 T/C engine and the 291 horsepower it develops from its 2.0-liter DOHC turbocharged and intercooled 4-cylinder configuration. Among this powerplant's high-performance design features are MIVEC variable valve timing for both the intake and exhaust camshafts and a cast-aluminum engine block and head. Redline for this engine is a sky-high 7,000 rpm.
Thankfully, the driver is able to masterfully apply this ample power to the road through all four wheels via Mitsubishi Motors' Super All-Wheel Control (S-AWC) high-tech all-wheel drive system that includes a 4-wheel-drive Active Center Differential (ACD), an Active Yaw Control (AYC) rear differential, and a helical gear-type limited-slip front differential.
Further aiding the tractability cause are a set of highly adhesive 245/40R18 low-profile Yokohama Advan® asymmetrical performance tires clad to lightweight 18-in. x 8.5-in. wheels, the Lancer Evolution GSR model wearing Enkei cast-alloy rims with the MR version possessing BBS® forged-alloy wheels.
In high-performance driving, slowing down is equally – if not more so – important than speeding up, so Mitsubishi Motors have enlisted a set of very capable Brembo® brakes. With muscular 4-piston calipers and 13.8-in. rotors up front and 2-piston rear calipers with 13.0-in. rotors at the rear, the Lancer Evolution has stopping power aplenty. What's more, the Lancer Evolution MR benefits from the use of lightweight two-piece brake rotors up front, saving 2.9 lbs. of unsprung weight per wheel.
All 2014 Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution models are loaded with a plethora of highly advanced safety features as well: a 7 air bag Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) has dual-stage front air bags with occupant sensors, driver and front passenger side-impact air bags, front and rear side curtain air bags, and a driver's knee air bag; Active Stability Control (ASC) and Sport ABS brakes with Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD); and Mitsubishi Motors' patented Reinforced Impact Safety Evolution (RISE) body/chassis occupant safety cell technology.
Another 2014 Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution element that helps provide peace of mind is an extensive vehicle warranty: a fully transferable 3-year/36,000-mile new vehicle limited warranty; 5-year/60,000-mile powertrain limited warranty (applicable to the vehicle's original purchaser); a 7-year/100,000-mile anti-corrosion perforation limited warranty; and 5-year/unlimited mile roadside assistance.
The preeminent model – the 2014 Lancer Evolution MR – is the most capable model available, thanks to the miraculously quick-shifting characteristics of the 6-speed Twin-Clutch Sportronic® Shift Transmission (TC-SST) that allows the driver to toggle rapidly through the gears via steering wheel paddle shifters or the shift lever. The MR's capabilities are further advanced thanks to the fitment of Bilstein® shock absorbers and Eibach® springs.
Other neat additions to the Lancer Evolution MR model are bi-xenon auto-off High-Intensity Discharge (HID) headlights and a low-profile rear lip spoiler.
Automotive purists who enjoy "old-fashioned" manual shifting – and may be looking to save a few dollars – can opt for the 2014 Mitsubishi Lancer GSR and its rifle bolt-decisive short-throw 5-speed manual. Another old school feature is the GSR's prominently large and stylish rear spoiler.
The 2014 Lancer Evolution GSR comes well equipped with supportive yet very comfortable Recaro® front bucket sport seats; lightweight aluminum roof and fenders (accompanied by the aforementioned aluminum hood); dual exhaust outlets; an aerodynamically-enhancing rear diffuser; a leather-wrapped sport steering wheel with cruise and audio controls; Mitsubishi Motors' FUSE Hands-Free Link System®, automatic climate control; remote keyless entry; fog lights; auto-off halogen headlights; and power windows, side mirrors and door locks.
