Having received a thorough makeover just last year that included interior/exterior, chassis and drivetrain enhancements, the popular American-made Mitsubishi Outlander Sport crossover – the Japanese auto manufacturer's best-selling model– gains further upgrades for the 2014 model year.
Among these changes for the company's handsome 5-passenger, EPA-rated 31 mpg highway (CVT-equipped 2WD models) is:
Other new additions to the 2014 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport include the availability of a new Premium Package for the SE trim level that includes a dynamic 710-watt Rockford Fosgate® premium sound system with 9 speakers including 10-in. dual-voice coil subwoofer with Punch Control®, DTS® Neural Surround, PremiDIA-WIDE® surround, and Dolby® Volume; an auto-dimming rearview mirror and the aforementioned power adjustable driver's seat. A new LED Daytime Running Lamps Package bundles the eye-catching LED DRLs with special front corner extensions.
New stand-alone options for the 2014 model Outlander Sport consist of the new MMCS navigation system with 7-in. high definition touch panel, and the stylish wheel lip arch trim featured on the 2013 Outlander Sport Limited Edition model that celebrates Mitsubishi Motors' 30 year anniversary in America.
Every 2014 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport includes a vast array of advanced standard safety features including Active Stability Control (ASC) with Hill Start Assist (HSA); anti-lock braking system (ABS) with Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD) and Brake Assist; Traction Control Logic (TCL); a Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS); and a 7 air bag Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) with front air bags with passenger weight and driver's seat position sensors, front seat-mounted side-impact air bags, and curtain side air bags with roll-over sensors.
These safety features, along with Mitsubishi's advanced Reinforced Impact Safety Evolution (RISE) patented safety body construction system, allowed the 2013 Outlander Sport to earn the prestigious “Top Safety Pick +” award from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS)—one of only two vehicles in the Small SUV category from a field of 13 vehicles.
Available with either a smooth-shifting 5-speed manual or an advanced continuously-variable transmission (CVT), the front-wheel drive 2014 Outlander ES model boasts a broad list of standard features. These include fuel-saving Electric Power Steering (EPS); auto-off halogen headlights; handsome 18-in. aluminum alloy wheels clad with P225/55R18 all-season tires; air conditioning with pollen filter; tilt and telescopic steering wheel; heated side view mirrors; chrome grille surround; remote keyless entry with panic feature; leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob; anti-theft security alarm system; high-contrast meter with full-color display; cruise control with steering wheel-mounted controls; 60/40 split fold-down rear seatbacks; roof carrier plug-in accommodation; and a 140-watt 4 speaker AM/FM/CD/MP3 audio system with FUSE Hand-Free Link System® with USB port.
Additionally, 2014 Mitsubishi Outlander ES models with the continuously-variable transmission (CVT) can also be outfitted with the Japanese auto manufacturer's exceptionally capable All-Wheel Control (AWC) electronically-controlled all-wheel drive system.
Raising the rich amenities and features ante is the deluxe Outlander Sport SE model. Available with either 2WD or the driver-selected, electronically-controlled All-Wheel Control (AWC) 4WD system, this model builds upon the long list of features found on the entry-level Outlander Sport ES model but adds such welcome niceties as One-touch Start/Stop (OSS) engine switch; FAST-key passive entry system; automatic climate control; Super-wide beam High-Intensity Discharge (S-HID) headlights with auto off/on control; heated front seats; rain-sensing wipers; and the previously mentioned new features for the 2014 model including the fantastic 6 speaker 6.1-in. display touchscreen audio system with HD Radio® and SIRIUSXM® satellite radio with 3-month subscription and a rearview camera.
Driver and passengers of all 2014 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport models are treated to a comfortable yet composed ride quality, thanks to an optimally designed suspension system featuring MacPherson struts with stabilizer bar up front with a multi-link set-up with stabilizer bar at the rear of the vehicle.
All 2014 Outlander Sport vehicles are powered by a DOHC 2.0-liter normally-aspirated 4-cylinder engine equipped with Mitsubishi's advanced MIVEC variable valve-timing technology. A new engine balancer shaft for the 2014 model helps to reduce noise, vibration and harshness (NVH) while providing smoother and quicker vehicle acceleration.
Producing an able 148 horsepower and making use of a helpful Eco indicator (CVT-equipped vehicles) light or a gear shift indicator (5-speed manual transmission-equipped cars) light, this highly fuel-efficient powerplant allows the Outlander Sport to be one of the highest fuel economy cars in its class with an EPA-rated highway fuel economy of 31 mpg.
